Causes
- Weak Wi-Fi 5 radio and antenna — The RG556 only has Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac) with a small internal antenna, and owners measure 5–6 Mbps on the 5GHz band while standing right next to the access point — where a phone gets 400+ Mbps. This is the single biggest factor behind the "RG556 weak Wi-Fi" threads: the radio itself, not your network, is the bottleneck.
- "Limited connection" on brand-new units — Multiple new RG556 owners report the device joins the network but is stuck on "limited connection" with no internet, across completely different routers. The device's DHCP/IP handling on the stock Android 13 build fails to obtain a usable connection state.
- Stale Wi-Fi state after a long power-off — Units left off for weeks come back with Wi-Fi that connects and instantly disconnects, on every network. The Android Wi-Fi supplicant state stored on the device becomes corrupted while it sits powered down.
- 5GHz band incompatibility — The RG556's 5GHz radio is picky about channels and band steering. On dual-band routers that broadcast a single SSID, the device often latches onto a 5GHz channel it cannot hold, while the 2.4GHz band works fine.
- Stock firmware Wi-Fi driver bugs — Early RG556 firmware builds shipped with flaky Wi-Fi behavior (random drops, slow speeds). Later FOTA updates included Wi-Fi fixes, so units still on the factory firmware show these problems far more often than updated ones.
How to Fix
- Restart the radio and the console — Swipe down to open quick settings, toggle Wi-Fi off and on, then enable Airplane mode for 30 seconds and disable it. If the connection still doesn't stick, reboot the RG556 — this clears most transient "connected but no internet" states.
- Forget and rejoin the network — Go to Settings → Wi-Fi, long-press the network, choose Forget, then reconnect and re-enter the password carefully. On this device a mistyped passphrase often shows up as "limited connection" or an instant drop rather than a clear password error.
- Move to the 2.4GHz band — Give the 2.4GHz network its own SSID (or disable band steering on the router) and connect the RG556 to it. The 2.4GHz link is far more stable on this device — use it for everyday downloads and save 5GHz for when you are very close to the router.
- Fix the DHCP/lease problem — For a persistent "limited connection": restart your router, then forget and rejoin the network. If it still fails, reserve a static IP for the RG556 in the router's DHCP settings (by MAC address), which sidesteps the device's flaky lease negotiation.
- Update the firmware via the FOTA app — Open the preinstalled FOTA Update app and install any available update; later RG556 builds improved Wi-Fi stability. Re-test the connection after updating before trying hardware-level fixes.
- Reset the network stack — Go to Settings → System → Reset options → Reset Wi-Fi, mobile & Bluetooth. This wipes the corrupted Wi-Fi state that causes instant disconnects after weeks of storage. You will need to re-enter your Wi-Fi passwords afterward.
- Work around the weak radio for cloud gaming — For streaming or cloud gaming where speed matters, connect the RG556 to your phone's USB tethering or sit close to the router. The 5GHz antenna simply cannot match a phone, and 2.4GHz is more reliable at short range on this model.
