Causes
- The Ambient Light (LED) setting is left enabled — The RG556's joystick LED rings are controlled by an "Ambient Light" toggle in the Android quick-settings panel. When this toggle is on, the LED controller keeps the strip in an active state; on many units the lights even turn back on after the device is shut down. Owners report the 5500 mAh battery drains completely within about 3 days of non-use because the LED strip and its controller stay powered while the console sits "off".
- Sleep/screen-off instead of a true power-off — Pressing the power button briefly (or letting the screen time out) only suspends Android 13; the LED strip remains lit or the controller stays awake. If you habitually "turn off" the console by just blanking the screen, the joystick LEDs keep drawing power the whole time, which reads as abnormal overnight battery drain.
- LED animation/breathing mode keeps the controller awake — The Ambient Light options include animated modes (breathing, cycling colors). Animated modes instruct the LED controller to keep producing frames indefinitely, and on the RG556 this controller is not always properly suspended on shutdown, so the strip keeps cycling — and draining — even with the screen off.
- Firmware bug in early RG556 builds — Early stock firmware versions had a known power-management quirk where the LED state wasn't saved across shutdown: whatever the LED mode was at power-off got restored at power-on, and in some builds the controller never fully slept. Anbernic addressed LED/power behavior in later FOTA (over-the-air) updates, so units still on the factory firmware exhibit the drain far more often.
How to Fix
- Turn off the Ambient Light toggle in quick settings — Swipe down from the top of the screen to open the quick-settings panel, swipe to the second page, and tap the Ambient Light toggle so it turns off. Long-press the toggle to open its options and set the mode to Off (not just a dimmer level). This is the direct switch for the joystick LEDs on the RG556 — with it off, the lights should not come back on after shutdown.
- Perform a full shutdown, not just screen-off — Hold the physical power button and choose Power off in the Android power menu. Wait for the screen to go completely black and the LEDs to go out, then set the console down. If the joystick lights come back on after a full shutdown, the firmware is not saving the LED-off state — proceed to step 3.
- Update the firmware via the FOTA app — Open the FOTA Update app on the RG556 (it ships preinstalled), connect to Wi-Fi, and check for updates. Install any available firmware — later RG556 builds fixed LED and standby power-management behavior. After updating, repeat step 1 (set Ambient Light to Off) and step 2 (full power-off), then verify the lights stay off.
- Verify the fix with a 24-hour battery test — Charge the RG556 to 100%, disable Ambient Light, perform a full power-off, and leave it alone for 24 hours. Power it back on and check the battery percentage. A healthy RG556 should lose only a few percent overnight; if it drops significantly (or the LEDs were on when you picked it up), the drain is still active.
- Clear app-level LED/power state with a factory reset — If the drain persists after a firmware update, back up your saves and ROMs, then go to Settings → System → Reset options → Erase all data (factory reset). A reset clears any corrupted LED/power state stored by the system UI. Re-run the 24-hour test afterward before reinstalling your emulators — this isolates a software state issue from a hardware fault.
- Contact Anbernic support if the drain continues — If the LEDs still light up or the battery still drains fast after a full power-off, firmware update, and factory reset, the LED controller board or the battery may be faulty. Contact Anbernic support ([email protected]) with your order number and a short video showing the LEDs turning on after shutdown. Do not open the case yourself while the device is under warranty — LED controller or battery faults are typically covered by Anbernic's 1-year warranty, and a replacement unit or repair will resolve the drain.
