Causes
- The ACEMAGIC M5 uses a small 40–50 mm fan that must spin at high RPM (4000–6000+) to cool the Core i9-14900HX in the compact chassis — smaller fans are inherently noisier than larger 80–120 mm desktop fans at equivalent airflow volumes
- Default BIOS fan curve is set aggressively — the fan ramps up early and reaches high speeds even during light tasks like web browsing or document editing, resulting in constant audible whirring at idle
- Dust buildup on the fan blades and bottom intake mesh unbalances the fan and forces it to spin faster to achieve the same airflow, compounding both noise and thermal issues over time
- The High Performance Windows power plan keeps the CPU in an elevated power state at all times, generating more heat and keeping the fan active even when the system is idle
- In some units, a defective fan bearing causes grinding, ticking, or rattling noises that are distinct from normal airflow sounds — this indicates a hardware defect requiring fan replacement
How to Fix
- Switch to Silent or Balanced power mode: if your M5 has a physical mode switch button (some models include one), press it to toggle to Silent mode. Alternatively, go to Settings → System → Power & Battery and select Balanced or Power Saver. This lowers CPU boost behavior and immediately reduces fan speed and noise by 40–60%.
- Clean the fan and vents: shut down the M5 and unplug the power adapter. Use compressed air to blow out dust from the bottom intake mesh, rear exhaust vents, and through the top ventilation grille. For best results, remove the bottom panel (screws under the rubber feet) and clean the fan blades directly with a soft brush or low-speed vacuum while holding the fan still to prevent bearing damage.
- Adjust the fan curve in BIOS: restart and press Del to enter BIOS. Navigate to Hardware Monitor → Fan Control. Set a gradual, quieter fan curve:
— 40°C → 20% speed (inaudible at desktop idle)
— 60°C → 40% speed
— 75°C → 60% speed
— 85°C → 80% speed
— 95°C → 100% speed
Save with F10 and reboot. This keeps the fan silent during light tasks while still providing full cooling under heavy load. - Undervolt the CPU to reduce overall heat output: download Intel XTU and apply a −50 mV to −70 mV core voltage offset. - Check for defective fan bearing: with the M5 powered on and the fan spinning, listen carefully. If you hear a grinding, ticking, scraping, or rattling sound (distinct from normal airflow), the fan bearing is likely defective. Stop the fan momentarily with a clean toothpick (press gently against the center hub) — if the noise stops, the bearing is the source.
- Replace the fan if defective: contact ACEMAGIC support for a warranty replacement fan. The M5 uses a standard 40 mm fan with a 2-pin or 3-pin connector. If out of warranty, a Noctua NF-A4x20 FLX (40 mm, 20 mm thick, ultra-quiet) can be adapted to fit with minor bracket modifications. The Noctua fan reduces noise from 32 dB(A) stock to approximately 18 dB(A).
- Reduce vibration noise: place the M5 on a rubber pad, silicone mat, or felt furniture pad. The stock rubber feet are small and transmit vibration to hard surfaces. A soft base decouples the fan vibration from your desk, significantly reducing perceived noise levels.
- Schedule regular maintenance: set a reminder to clean the M5's intake vents every 3 months. Dust accumulation is a progressive problem — a small amount each week compounds into significantly louder fan operation and higher temperatures over time. Regular compressed air cleaning keeps the fan running at its designed speed and noise level.
