Causes
- The Hall Effect joystick's stored center/neutral calibration was disturbed while a stick was held to one side during a force-off or a low-battery shutdown, so the controller thinks mid-range position is actually the resting point and the camera or character drifts on its own
- A leftover stick remap or macro applied through 8BitDo Ultimate Software V2 (or an interrupted on-device assignment) bound one stick axis to a fake direction, making a physically centered stick report continuous input
- Low battery voltage on the 480mAh cell — the Hall sensor supply becomes noisy near empty, so one stick intermittently reports off-center values even after the controller recovers mid-charge
- Firmware glitch where the stick processor holds a stale or corrupted calibration block after an interrupted firmware update, producing drift that persists across power cycles
- Metal debris or a tiny ferrous particle lodged in the metal joystick ring or near the Hall sensor distorting the magnetic field for one axis — more likely if the controller is old or was exposed to dust
How to Fix
- Power-cycle cleanly with sticks centered. Turn the controller off, set the back mode switch to Off, place both joysticks flat in the neutral position, wait 10 seconds, then power it back on. This re-reads the resting state on startup and clears a one-off misread.
- Disable stick remaps and macros. Open 8BitDo Ultimate Software V2 over USB-C, go to the button/stick mapping screen, and confirm no drift-inducing remap or macro is bound to an axis. Reset stick assignments to default, save, and re-test in
joy.cpl(Win + R →joy.cpl→ Properties → Test tab). - Recalibrate the sticks. In Ultimate Software V2, open the Joystick/Stick Calibration section (this controller exposes a factory-style calibration for its Hall Effect modules). Follow the on-screen prompts — fully rotate each stick to its travel limits, then leave it centered — and save the new center point. Re-test for drift.
- Charge the battery fully. Connect via the included USB cable and let the 480mAh cell reach 100% (about 2 hours). If drift disappears on a full charge but returns near-empty, low-voltage sensor noise is the cause.
- Update firmware. With the controller wired by USB-C, open the Firmware Update tab in Ultimate Software V2 and apply the latest release. Do not disconnect or power off during the update. Newer firmware often refines Hall stick centering and dead-zone handling.
- Clear dust from the stick well. With the controller off, use a can of compressed air around the base of each stick and gently rotate them to dislodge any debris. Do not use liquid cleaners, and avoid prying the joystick cap off — that can misalign the Hall sensor.
- Test in another title and input mode. Verify in a second game and across both 2.4G and wired connections to rule out a game's own dead-zone or aim-assist setting being mistaken for drift. If the stick registers perfect in
