Causes
- The 1100mAh NiMH battery pack is not seated properly inside the controller — a loose connection triggers the dock's overcharge protection, causing it to cut power
- Oxidized or bent charging contacts on the battery door create intermittent contact: the dock senses a connection, starts charging, then loses it and shuts off
- The battery pack has reached end of life — NiMH cells degrade after about 300 charge cycles and can no longer hold a charge, causing the dock to detect a fault
- Firmware incompatibility between the dock and a newer Xbox controller model — the charging handshake fails and the dock aborts power delivery
- Overheating protection triggered by using the dock in a confined, poorly ventilated space, causing the thermal cutoff to engage
How to Fix
- Remove the battery pack from the controller and reinsert it firmly, ensuring the contacts slide fully into the terminal slots. Push down until you hear a click on both sides.
- Inspect the battery door's charging contacts — look for bent, corroded, or misaligned pins. Gently bend any misaligned pins back into position using a plastic spudger or toothpick.
- Clean all contact points: the dock pins, the battery door contacts, and the battery pack terminals. Use a cotton swab dipped in 90%+ isopropyl alcohol, then dry completely with a lint-free cloth.
- Try charging with the controller powered off. A controller that is running or syncing may draw current inconsistently, tripping the dock's safety cutoff.
- If the light continues to turn off after a few seconds, test the dock with a different Xbox controller (if available). This tells you whether the problem is with the dock or the original controller's battery pack.
- Replace the 1100mAh NiMH battery pack if it's more than a year old or has been through heavy use. A fresh battery pack restores proper charging behavior. 8BitDo sells replacement packs, or you can use any Xbox One/Series X|S play-and-charge kit battery.
- Update your Xbox controller firmware via Settings → Devices & Connections → Accessories on your console. A controller firmware update can resolve charging handshake issues.
- Move the dock to an open, well-ventilated area away from heat sources. If the dock feels hot to the touch, let it cool for 30 minutes before trying again.
