Causes
- The rotating head was turned by hand — the Omni's stepper motor counts rotation steps to know where the lens is pointing, so any manual twist of the head breaks its absolute position reference: the camera still records, but it points at the wrong angle and "forward" is lost. 70mai's own Omni FAQ is blunt: "Doing so will confuse the angle positioning logic of the dash cam, resulting in dash cam not working. Forced rotation may even cause damage to the device's motor." The dash cam does not notice the manual change and must be recalibrated.
- The 'boot working position' setting was changed — the head's startup angle is a saved setting, not a fixed physical position. If it was changed in the app (or corrupted by a manual nudge that confused the angle logic), the camera powers up pointing somewhere other than straight ahead every time the car starts. The FAQ directs users to re-set the boot working position to match the real-time lens view in the app.
- Remote control or voice commands left the head in a non-forward position — after you pan the head from the app's live-streaming joystick, a "Shoot Left"/"Shoot Right" voice command, or remote surveillance control, the head stays at that last commanded angle while driving. ADAS in particular stops broadcasting after the lens angle deviates, because "the existing ADAS calibration data will be immediately invalid" once the orientation changes — 70mai's FAQ names this exact cause for both ADAS silence and a lens that is not aiming at the front.
- ADAS calibration data is bound to the lens angle — the forward collision and lane-departure alerts estimate spacing and lane lines based on the lens pointing exactly forward. When the head is misaligned, the ADAS algorithm can't estimate vehicle spacing or identify lane lines, so all its alerts disable — the symptom appears to be "ADAS broken" when it is actually "the lens angle changed."
- A previous OTA or crash left the angle memory out of sync — if the dash cam restarts mid-rotation during a firmware update, power cut, or crash, the saved head position can be stale, so the head steers to the wrong angle at boot until the calibration routine runs.
How to Fix
- Run the "Tripod Head Calibration" from the app's real-time page — start the car, connect the phone to the camera (Wi-Fi), open the 70mai app, and on the real-time/live view page tap the "Tripod Head Calibration" button. This returns the rotating head to its default working position — the same action 70mai's FAQ prescribes after any manual adjustment. This is the fastest and most reliable fix for a misaligned head.
- Restart the dash cam to trigger automatic re-calibration — power-cycle the camera (unplug the USB power cable and plug it back in) or long-press the power button to shut it down and press it again to boot. On boot the head re-runs its positioning routine; if a hardwire kit is installed, the head also auto-calibrates when the vehicle enters Smart Parking Guardian mode after shutdown.
- Re-set the 'boot working position' in the app — in the app's device settings, open the "Boot working position of tripod head" setting and align it with the live lens view per the on-screen guidance, then save. The FAQ says to "set the default working position of the dash cam according to the real-time display" — this fixes the case where the camera consistently starts up facing the wrong way.
- Re-calibrate ADAS with the lens at the correct angle — turn ADAS off in the app's dash cam settings, turn it back on to enter the lens calibration process, then drive above 40 km/h (25 mph) on a road with clear lane lines while keeping the lens clean and unobstructed. Per the Omni FAQ, calibration requires clear lane lines, an appropriate lens angle, and speed above 40 km/h — completing it restores forward-collision and lane-departure alerts.
- Use remote calibration after shutdown if you have the 4G kit — with the 4G hardwire kit, the car off, open the app's Remote Control page and tap "Tripod head calibration" to command the head back to the parking detection position — or simply exit the live-streaming page: the FAQ notes the head auto-calibrates about 5 minutes after you leave the app.
- If the head drifts mid-drive, run the 15-second hard reset — long-press the power button for 15+ seconds to force a full restart, which re-initializes the motor controller and its angle counter. Only attempt this with the camera properly powered so the head can complete its homing sweep.
- Stop turning the head by hand from now on — never twist the lens manually to "aim" it: use the app's tripod-head controls, voice commands, or the boot-working-position setting instead. 70mai explicitly warns that hand rotation confuses the positioning logic and can damage the motor — prevention is the real long-term fix for this device.
- Contact 70mai support if the head still won't align — if calibration, restarts, and position resets leave the head pointing the wrong way or grinding/clicking, the stepper motor or its encoder may be damaged (especially after any forced rotation). Contact 70mai support with your order info and a short video of the head's movement; owners with motor faults received replacement units under warranty.
