AUO is Working on 480 Hz Gaming Monitors for PC and Laptops

Traditionally, PC screens have operated at 60 Hz. That refresh rate means that the image on your screen redraws or refreshes 60 times per second. A 120 Hz screen would redraw twice as fast, and so on. A higher refresh rate generally results in a smoother-looking image, although there can be exceptions to that rule.

While current models top out at 360 Hz, there have been prototypes shown that can go even higher. This is thanks to the use of high-speed digital micromirror devices, which are able to rapidly switch between different images. This technology has already been used in commercial displays, such as those found in airports and stadiums.

However, it is only now starting to appear in consumer-grade monitors. While there are no products on the market yet, it is only a matter of time before we see high-refresh-rate monitors become the norm.

Now, back to 480 Hz. That’s an incredibly high refresh rate, eight times faster than a standard 60 Hz screen. And while it might sound like overkill, there are actually a few reasons why you might want a screen with such a high refresh rate. First, if you’re a competitive gamer, even the slightest advantage can mean the difference between winning and losing. A higher refresh rate can also reduce eye strain, which is always a good thing.

Of course, there are some potential downsides to consider as well. For one thing, higher refresh rates generally require more powerful hardware to run properly. That means that if you want a 480 Hz screen, you’ll probably need to invest in a pretty beefy computer. Additionally, higher refresh rates can sometimes result in ghosting, where fast-moving objects leave faint trails behind them on the screen.

480Hz Gaming Monitors are on the Horizon

As reported by TFT Central this week, AUO has announced that it is working on a 24-inch PC monitor panel with a 480 Hz refresh rate and response time that is under 1 ms. This new panel is aimed at gamers and will offer them a smoother and more immersive gaming experience.

AU Optronics is working on a new line of LCD panels with a whopping 480 Hz refresh rate, making them the fastest PC displays on the market. What’s even more impressive is that these panels are also super thin and light, making them perfect for gaming laptops and ultrawide monitors.

The higher refresh rate means that there will be less motion blur, making it easier to track fast-moving objects on screen. This is especially important for competitive gamers who need every advantage they can get. While we don’t yet know when these panels will be available or how much they’ll cost, it’s clear that AU Optronics is leading the charge when it comes to display technology.

AUO sells panels to monitor vendors, including Acer, Asus, and MSI, and the 16-inch 480 Hz screen made for laptops appears to be slightly higher in terms of response time, at “1.xms.” This new development from AUO is sure to be welcomed by gamers looking for the best possible gaming experience.

AU Optronics’ 480 Hz panels are being developed with a more conventional resolution, but they will use TN (twisted nematic) LCD LED panels.
